Why Proper Preparation Is Critical for International Moving

International moving involves far more than packing boxes. Overseas relocation requires export compliance, documentation accuracy, customs coordination, secure packing, and global logistics planning. Following a professional international moving checklist ensures your household goods and personal effects move smoothly through customs procedures, port handling, and international delivery without delays or unexpected costs.

Families, corporate transferees, diplomats, collectors, and international clients who prepare properly reduce risk and ensure their relocation process is efficient and stress-free.

What do I need for an international move?
To move internationally you typically need a detailed inventory list, identification documents, shipping instructions, customs documentation, and confirmation of destination import requirements. Proper preparation ensures smooth customs clearance and safe delivery of household goods.

  • Separate fragile and high-value items / label as fragile do not stack
  • Separate and pack heavy items, label as heavy.
  • Label all cartons clearly
  • Photograph valuable items
  • Confirm packing method (professional or owner-packed)
  • Verify destination restrictions | Contact Destination Embassy
  • Secure electronics and delicate items | Verify if Electronics are compatible at destination
  • Check with destination country for any import approval process or requirements prior to shipping.
  • Is the Container to be fumigated prior to exporting it, and is the fumigation required by the destination country?

Step 3 — Logistics & Compliance Coordination

Professional international moving requires:

Common Mistakes That Cause Overseas Moving Delays

International relocation shipments are often delayed because of:

  • inaccurate declarations

These issues can result in delays. Experienced logistics providers review documentation carefully before shipment to prevent any situations.

Important Notice Regarding Customs Inspections

CBP – DHS – US Customs Holds Exams or Inspections Delays

All shipments are subject to US customs holds or examinations.

CBP understands the cargo examination process may lead to a number of questions by customers.  One option you may want to consider is advising your customers to view CBP’s website at https://www.cbp.gov/border-security/ports-entry/cargo-security/examination to learn more about cargo examinations  You may also add this link to your website for the public to access.

CBP is tasked with protecting our Nation’s borders and enforcing numerous laws at ports of entry on behalf of other government agencies, including state and local law enforcement.  All persons, shippers, forwarders, baggage, and other merchandise arriving in or leaving the United States are subject to inspection and search by CBP officers.  Occasionally, CBP may inconvenience law-abiding persons in our efforts to detect, deter, and mitigate threats.  We appreciate your patience, cooperation, and understanding in the effective protection of our borders.

In terms of C-TPAT member examinations, C-TPAT members remain subject to US customs inspections and or exams. In fact all cargo remains subject to be transfer to US customs bonded warehouse, when requested and required by CBP officers.

Once the cargo arrives at a Centralized Examination Station (CES) or terminal, CBP will ensure that the C-TPAT participant is transfer with all the other C-TPAT members which are also expecting for their full inspection to be conducted.  CBP also conducts exams for the non C-TPAT members at our CES or terminal.

There are no costs or fees charged by CBP; however, Centralized Examination Stations, carriers  and the terminals do charge various fees on both exportation and importation including but not limited to: port demurrage, port exam fees charges, US customs bonded warehouse dray, chassis, unloading, reloading, exam fees, carrier roll over fees, carrier administrative fees, etc and this must be paid to their respective party in order to have the containers  released for exportation or importation.

International shipping, however, involves multiple independent third-party entities — including ports, customs authorities, inspection agencies, terminals, and carriers — whose actions, requirements, and fees are outside the control of any logistics company. If additional charges arise due to actions taken by these external authorities, they are not included unless expressly stated in writing. Such charges may include, but are not limited to:

·        equipment per diem charges

·        carrier roll-over or schedule adjustment fees

·        government-mandated inspection procedures

These charges, when applicable, are assessed directly by the respective authority or facility and apply industry-wide regardless of which shipping company is used. We strongly believe that an informed client is a confident client.
